Houghton International ran it's first novice event in the summer of 2006, as a test event for the site with a view to running International classes in 2007.

Hugh has been heavily involved in the development of this site since it's inception and designed the first CCI** and CCI* here for May 2007 when it was described by world No.1, William Fox-Pitt as 'one of the best 2** tracks I'd seen for a long time'.

In 2008 the event again hosted a CCI** and a CCI*. For the second year running it attracted huge entries and ran with great success. There was continued interaction with the riders throughout the week of the event and it was decided that a loop should be taken out of the 2** track due to firm ground on that particular section of the course. This action was well recieved by the riders and the course was still able to produce a good confidence boosting result for the competition.
